“Breast Cancer now ranks first among the most common cancers”
Minister of Health Fahrettin Koca shared about "Breast Cancer Awareness Month" on his social media account. Koca shared the following information:
"On the occasion of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I find it necessary to share some of the information that is of great concern to all ladies and their families.
Breast cancer, which is the most common disease in women and also causes the highest death rate, has now risen to the first place, accounting for 11.7% of all cancers. This is followed by lung cancer. Therefore, breast cancer screenings are of great importance.
Breast cancer, which was diagnosed at an advanced stage in the past, can now be diagnosed at an earlier stage with the screening programs carried out by the Ministry of Health. Treatment of breast cancers detected at the early stages is more successful, and the patient's quality of life increases significantly.
Community-based cancer screenings have started by establishing Cancer Early Diagnosis, Screening and Training Centers (KETEM) in all our provinces, and Healthy Life Centers (SHM) have been included in these screening programs. The services provided are free of charge.
What should be done to avoid breast cancer?
As against all cancers; the risk can be reduced by having balanced diets that are adequate in terms of vegetables and fruit, consuming foods prepared under appropriate conditions, increasing physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding smoking and alcohol use.
Since there are many scientific studies showing that breastfeeding protects against breast cancer, it is recommended that mothers breastfeed their babies for at least 2 years. Lifestyle-related, modifiable factors play a major role in breast cancer. These include obesity, never giving birth, and using hormone medication for more than two years after menopause.
What are the symptoms of breast cancer?
The most common symptom of breast cancer is the feeling of a painless mass that grows over time. Starting from the age of twenty, it is important to examine yourself regularly every month and to apply to a healthcare institution if there is a change. Women between the ages of 40 and 69 should have a free mammography screening every two years, even if they have no complaints. This mammography screening is free.
How is breast cancer diagnosed?
Breast cancer may not cause symptoms until later in life. Therefore, it is necessary to apply to healthcare centers. Early diagnosis increases the success rate of treatment.
How is breast cancer treated?
Breast cancer treatment can be highly effective, reaching survival probabilities of 90% or higher, especially when the disease is diagnosed early. Different treatment options are applied for breast cancer, such as surgery, radiation therapy and medication therapy.
October is the Breast Cancer Awareness Month all over the world. Women should put this issue on their agenda. Women should lead a healthy and long life.”
